Mason student, local businessmen establish basketball tournament for Afghan orphans and widows.

THE OLD SAYING goes, home is where your heart is. For Maria Kazemi, Reza Afshar and Naser Shahalemi, that means giving back to their native Afghanistan whenever and however they can. As another bitter winter approaches, thoughts turn to those less fortunate on the other side of the world. Kazemi, a graduate student at George Mason University and former president of the Afghan Student Union there, had organized a clothing drive last year, collecting scarves, sweaters, shoes and blankets for orphans and widows for the country that has been devastated by war over the past three decades. Three Arrested in Burglary Spree
Thieves went after gold jewelry in South Asian households.

ON TUESDAY, NOV. 10, police arrested three people suspected of a string of 26 burglaries across Fairfax County since late January. Most of the victims have been of South Asian descent, a population that appears to have been targeted because its members traditionally own relatively large collections of high-karat gold jewelry, often passed down through the generations. More than half of the burglaries in the county took place in the Fair Oaks police district. Read more...

Salvation Army kicks off the 2009 Red Kettle Campaign at the Burke Wal-Mart.

RED KETTLES MANNED by Salvation Army volunteers are about as omnipresent as mall Santas, toy advertisements and Christmas carols during the holiday season, and that is the way its officials like it. From November through Christmas, volunteers can be found in front of nearly every supermarket, mall or department store ringing bells and collecting money for those in need, totaling more than $130 million nationwide last year.
